Why Ferneley’s?
The common question we get asked is why did we choose to call our family business ‘Ferneley’s’.
In 1990, our best Friesian cow called Faithfull won Top Cow and Highest Yielding Cow in Leicestershire and Rutland herd competition. That year she gave birth to a quality bull calf. Peter Darlington was looking for a name for this bull and decided to take inspiration from John Ferneley and named the bull Leesthorpe Ferneley.
John Ferneley was a local painter who lived in Melton Mowbray in the mid 1800’s. He was known for his landscape and animal paintings, including hunting scenes. He was regarded as a great equine artist in England.
Ferneley the bull exceeded all expectations and became very well known in the friesian cattle world. Leesthorpe Ferneley’s genetics produced some outstanding animals.
Many of the cows in our herd today are closely related to Ferneley, so the milk we use is truly Ferneley’s! We use this milk to make our delicious ice cream, drinks & many of our homemade cakes. You can also try our delicious milk from our milk vending machine.
